November Devotional

In Everything Give Thanks

"In everything give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you." 1 Thessalonians 5:18

I have got to be honest. There have been situations, circumstances, and experiences in my life where I did not give thanks.

In fact, there are times when I have been downright ungrateful! But over the years I have learned that all my experiences in life will not be pleasant and that there are time I will face heartache, regret, disappointment, and disillusionment. So how do we give thanks in everything, especially when life takes a turn that is different than the one we expect? It is right in the verse "...for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus Concerning you." We can give thanks in everything only as we are totally surrendered to the will of God. I have found this verse to be much easier to memorize that it is to practice; and so I surmise, that I need to surrender daily!

What is it that hinders us from daily living at an altitude of "in everything give thanks?" Is it discouragement? Psalm 27:14 says, "Wait on the Lord, be of good courage, and He shall strengthen thine heart. Wait, I say, on the Lord." Is it worry? Isaiah 26:3 says, "Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on Thee, because he trusteth in Thee." Is it sin? 1 John 1:8-9 says, "If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confes our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness."

In the power of the Holy Spirit, we can "in everything give thanks" as we stand absolutely, boldly, and confidently on the irrevocable promises of our Supreme, Immutable, Divine Promise Keeper. My challenge to you is that we make 1 Thessalonians 5:18 our determination from this day forward

This Month's Scripture Reading

Psalm 95:1-6

1 Oh come, let us sing to the Lord!
Let us shout joyfully to the Rock of our salvation.
Let us come before His presence with thanksgiving;
Let us shout joyfully to Him with psalms.
For the Lord is the great God,
And the great King above all gods.
In His hand are the deep places of the earth;
The heights of the hills are His also.
The sea is His, for He made it;
And His hands formed the dry land.

Oh come, let us worship and bow down;
Let us kneel before the Lord our Maker.

The Bible is God’s redemptive revelation to man. Its primary focus is to reconcile fallen man back to Himself. There was one and only one way this could be done. Atonement had to be made for man’s sins!

The church covenant is a voluntary agreement by members of the Church whereby they promise to conduct their lives in such a way as to glorify God and promote the ongoing of His Church. Every member should study it carefully, refer to it often and seek to live by it. This clearly outlines the obligation of church membership.
