History of New Hope Baptist Church

Our Mission

The mission of New Hope Baptist Church is to fulfill the Great Commission by creating a spirit-filled church where worship, fellowship, and spiritual growth thrive. Rooted in the liberating power of Jesus Christ, we are a worshiping, welcoming, and witnessing congregation committed to breaking down barriers, building meaningful partnerships, and transforming lives through the gospel. Through faithful teaching, compassionate service, and a commitment to justice, we seek to renew hope, reflect God’s love, and make a lasting impact in our community and beyond.

Our History

On April 16, 1926, the Original Solid Rock Baptist Church was founded under the leadership of the late Rev. Dotson, meeting at 2715 Washington Avenue in New Orleans, LA. Following the guidance of the Holy Spirit, the congregation changed the church’s name to New Hope Baptist Church on March 27, 1930. After Pastor Dotson’s passing, Rev. Freddie H. Dunn was called to lead New Hope Church in 1952. Due to the congregation’s exponential growth, a larger facility was required, and in 1965, the church relocated to its current location at 1807 Rev. John Raphael, Jr. Way (formerly LaSalle Street).

To better serve the needs of the growing congregation, Pastor Dunn envisioned the construction of an Educational Building, which was completed in November 1985. On February 23, 1988, Pastor Dunn was called home by the Lord. In March 1988, Rev. John C. Raphael was appointed as the Under-Shepherd. Under Pastor Raphael’s leadership, the membership continued to grow, and additional ministries and programs were established. After 25 years of dedicated service, Pastor Raphael was called home by the Lord on June 15, 2013.

On July 26, 2013, Rev. Jamaal Weathersby was appointed by the Lord to serve as the Pastor of New Hope. Pastor Weathersby is committed to empowering believers with tools to effectively expand the Kingdom of God. He actively and intentionally seeks to fulfill God’s purpose for New Hope Baptist Church and the community it serves. Today, New Hope continues to be a beacon of light in the Central City community and throughout the metropolitan area of New Orleans.
